I am researching this house as part of a Landscape Architecture prgram at University of Massachusetts. I recall Eileen Gray's many designs in the decorative arts and thier influence in modern design from when I was younger during the 60's. It would serve us all well to restore her home, as it is a reflective of the human relationship to the domestic environment and because as a woman, acknowledgemnet of her work was already once nearly denied, in particular to this masterpiece.

It is deplorable that such a work of artistic and historical signifigance should be let go to ruin! Architecture defines us, reflecting who we are and how we live. To let this masterpiece of architecture decay into oblivion perhaps reflects a deeper decay amongst society in that we value less education in the arts and artistic achievement. Count me in on any preservation information/activities and I shall spread the message to all in my design clsses. Stephanie Hernandez Marquez Design Student

Renate Allmayer-Beck

I am doing a history paper on Eileen Gray. In doing my research, this is the first resource I have seen this disaster. My heart dropped to the floor to see these pictures. It saddens me to see it. I am literally speechless in trying to write this because of disbelief. I feel a loss and am enraged that it has not been kept up. Something MUST BE DONE!!! I am sure that designers, artists, architects, and many others would be honored to work on such a project. I am a senior in interior design at North Dakota State University and would feel privileged to be a part of it. Please let me know if there is anything I can do.

I´m a finnish architecture student, studying in Denmark, I´m at the moment working on an analyse on this very villa E 1027. While searching for material to the project on the net, I found this horrible news concernng the state of the villa,it shocked me deeply. I simply can´t understand how such an important house just can be forgotten about! There´s no doubt about this buildings immence importance for the modernistic developement. Is the villa left to its destiny just because she didn´t have a proper architectural education, or simply because she´s female??! Since Gray hasn´t done so many projects to be seen by the later generations, it should be even more important to restore the ones she actually did!

We are very surprised to see that this web page has not changed as we asked docomomo to do that. In fact, E-1027 was saved by the combined action of the city of Roquebrune Cap Martin and the French Government organisation "le Conservatoire du Littoral", who together bought "the house at the seaside" on October 25th, 1999. Also, the French Government has classified the Eileen Gray's House as an Historical Monument in march, 2000. Now, we are going to restore E-1027 as it was in 1929. It will house, together with the whole of the Modern site of Cap Martin, as a research centre for Modernity, and will also open to organized public visits. This project is going to coast a lot (probably more than 1 million $), and if you want to support actively this beautiful idea, we will be pleased to become you as a member of the “Association for the safekeeping of the Eileen Gray and Le Corbusier site in Roquebrune Cap Martin”, which was specifically created to help and support this purpose, as well as keep an eye on the right restoration of E- 1027. When we drive a car across France, we notice that everything is organized, clean, atractive, "a party for the eyes"...How can that the french responsables just did not realised, that one of the most important examples of architecture at all levels, reached this extremely sad situation, in their beautiful and well organized country?... Where is their pride?

Thank you Herman and Hans Hertzberger for this wonderful possibility to use a network and thanks to all of you who took part!! I am very happy to read all those comments by people who are interested in the house E.1027 of Eileen Gray. I am member of the group "Projektgruppe E 1027" in Germany that was founded in 1998 after a visit in France when I found the house in a bad condition. Our aim is to appreciate the work of Eileen Gray and to help to restore it. Therefore we stay in contact with the mayor deputy of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin and the architect to be well informed about the activities referring to the house. As a result we are very happy to tell you that the house will be restored and used as a centre of architectural reserche. Meanwhile our group takes part in the activities of the organisation Designerinnen Forum e.V. Germany, Swiss and Austria, a network for female designers. Our effort is to support the restoration. In this desperate situation, may I provide some information about a solution to a similar case in Sydney which I curated recently. The first Sydney cottage designed by Chicago architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahoney Griffin was sold as part of a deceased estate, in parlous condition, on a large, eminently redevelopable block of land. Many of its original fittings (light fittings reminiscent of the Griffins work with Frank lloyd Wright) and magical paint finishes, hardware etc were more or less intact, though the whole house had suffered extreme water penetration for many years. Moreover, it was threatened by the capacity of its undeveloped land for total redevelopment to higher density. With strong community support, the property was purchased by the Historic Houses Trust of NSW as a temporary house museum. A draft Conservation Plan, was very quickly prepared in accordance with the Australia ICOMOS Burra Charter to guide the works. All stages of its repair and reconstruction were demonstrated through public open days and seminars. The redevelopment potential of its large site was (controversially) resolved through the construction of a similarly scaled cottage adjacent, demonstrating sympathetic infill design, but in no way mimicing Griffin's style. After 2 years of work, with a maintenance plan for future owners and state heritage legislative protection, the conserved Griffin cottage and the new house were sold back into private ownership, and the project broke even, given some public subsidy. Similar cases using revolving funds have taken place world wide, but the use of this place as a conservation work-in-progress, proved both financially viable and educationally eloquent. Is there any hope that a similar concept might be tried for Villa E1027, if not by its local community, by the Docomomo community? Congratulations, Docomomo on airing this debate and making far-flung members aware of such Heritage at Risk. Has E1027 been nominated to the World Monuments Watch? Please keep us all posted on further developments.

That situation was relatively well known in France since the time I was still studying at university... and until now, no one seemed to particularly care about it. As you might know, the modern movement was not really considered until recently... for that reason the interest and the protection for it had first been focused on the major personalities. And E. Gray was not mediatic enough until today. It is a good thing that not only Le Corbusier work is also getting under protection. In Tokyo - where I am leaving now - even the level of the French authorities is still far to be reached. If you are looking for a big fight in the field of modern movement culture please ask against the destruction of the Aoyama Dojunkai. Well known here among the specialists - it has to be displayed at the next Docomomo conference in Brasilia - but also among young people who love to stroll in that area, he is promised to a "restructuration" under the Tadao Ando's expertise... what means that a part of a still lively heritage from the Showa era is closed to disappear....

Our memories are so short and yet we choose not to keep those reminders of all that is important. The subtlety of EIleen Gray's work has been an inspiration to many architects and designers over the years and it is nexessary to preserve E.1027 as the prototype it was intended to be. Oh yes, and get rid of the Corb murals. They were an affront when they were executed and they remain so now!

Shocking! As a young women in Architecture school in 1980, we asked, "Weren't there any women architects?" We found Eileen Gray! This is indeed a travesty--to let her wonderful monument go to ruin, Not to mention the Corbusier murals--that makes this situation even more dire! Will the owners sell to some responsible party?

Martien Kuipers, maruniek@dds.nl
I cannot help but think of Beatriz Colominas writings on this house; how Le Corbusier's murals consitute an act of violence on the architecture itself since they are done against Gray's will; "as a defacement of her work and even of her sexuality. It was rape". And, indeed, the rape continues. It would be a tragic paradox if the only way to save E.1027 now would be by associating it with the "heroic" memory of Le Corbusier…

Liselotte Coenen, R.Schmitz@wxs.nl
The need for preservation of E.1027 is obvious, but how? Should it be returned to its original form, or should Le Corbusier's murals be preserved (even though they are neither original nor respectful of the house's original design)? If those are to be saved, then what about those murals of more recent vintage visible on in the photo facing Corbu's? Many buildings can be saved by "preservation", but the particulars of E.1027 ought to make us all ask questions of how best to let a building live.

Most amazing, this fate of the Gray villa! Of course shocking to architecture lovers everywhere. Why, you ask, leave this work just rotting away? Aren't the murals reason enough to keep the villa in tact? Perhaps they're complete idiots. In that case we should forgive their ignorance, and lock them up in an asylum. Perhaps they're doing this to earn money. Then we could convince them restoring the villa would be profitable. But what if they were doing this out of misguided belief? What if they were followers of Carel Weeber on a quest to clean the world of architecture every ten years? Then we should shoot them and their leader on sight!

I have read many of the comments in the guest book, none of which are dated (my own comments are made on 8 September 1999). So my question is: where are things at this point? And where are attempts to galvanize support to purchase the property? I note some well known architects who have commented in this guest book, and many of them have expressed a wlllingness to become involved in fundraising and public-awareness efforts. So at the beginning of September 1999, where do things stand??

Did somebody knows what happens in the last few months. I send a letter to the city mayor but never get an answers. I know the price was not terribly expensive but the city wanted to buy the house and turn it as a Le Corbuseir cultural center. What a shame for Eileen gray !
Libourel jean-Claude, jclibourel@aol.com
E1027 doit etre restaurée. E1027 must be saved.

I cannot believe that things like this are possible in our "civilised and cultural" society. Well, you don't piss on your own feet. By saving that what can be saved you can give a sign to the people that some places and some things are bigger than anyone's own will. We MUST have respect for our predecessor's work and ideas and teach our children to to the same. Otherwise, everything we do will dissapear soon too. Minja Smajic, Art Director, Stockholm

I spent 7 years of my life studying the Villa E.1027 for my doctoral thesis. It is really a disaster to realize the current state of the villa now a days. Knowing the quality of this example of modern architecture and the critic intention of the work of Eileen Gray when she projected the villa, I think it is patrimony of the humanity. We should be ashamed to see so many rubbish architecture (or false architecture) praised, protected and published while so many works of architecture with extrem good quality due to its authenticity are demolished or abandoned. Carmen Espegel

The Roquebrune house must be restored/protected - but surely it should be restored to Eileen Gray's original design and this would include removing Le Corbusier's later, insensitive and intrusive 'murals', which I believe caused Gray great distress. Eileen Gray means so much to so many people for so many reasons - Irish, woman, architect, lesbian, designer, rebel, pioneer, role-model, neglected, resurgent. Thank you to those who have fought and are fighting to defend her achievements. 'Beir bua' [an old Irish greeting - 'May victory be yours']
Roisin Ni Mhaille Battel, R.N.M.Battel@uel.ac.uk
Bart Lootsma, boiling@luna.nl
This would never happen to one of those Corb buildings! It is surprising that the Corb. Foundation in Paris has not stuck its nose into this appaling state of affairs...Or are they finally realising what a total embarassement it would be to have to admit that Corb. was the first person to vandalise this beautiful building with his clumsy murals in his ill conceived attempt to claim its authorship? If we can't save this building we must at least preserve its fascinating history in writing.

Another famous (and delicate) modern house was in a similar state and until recently in serious jeopardy. Now it is restored and home to an institute for architectural studies. Designed by Rudolph Schindler in 1921 for himself, his wife and a colleague - a structural engineer and his wife - Schindler's Kings Road House in Hollywood California was falling to pieces when I went to see it in 1987. I climbed in through a broken windo to look around. Since then an architect set up office in the garage, and they were eventually replaced with the conservation group established to save the house. Perhaps this organisation can offer guidance re: the Eileen Grey villa.

As a student of architecture it saddens me deeply to see an important part of our heritage slip into oblivion without as much as a whisper. The Value of this building must be brought to the attention of a larger segment of the general population, so that potential sponsors for a much needed restoration and of course re-usage of the building can be made possibel.

i am shocked that as of now [which is to say 3/4 of a century later!] no one---no individual, no institution---has mustered enough foresight to preserve this significant early modernist work. the interior photograph underscores the disturbing, outrageous level of neglect that i sense when i look at this image. i'm astonished that the Corbusier mural was not [perhaps has been since this telling photograph appeared in the press] defaced as well. i'll leave the reader with a final remark in the form of a question: is this photograph working on another level, is it signifying the present state of our culture, and its self-directed priorities? robert barnhill architecture and urban theory tu delft

For anyone who has been a student of design, Eileen Gray represents one of the true pioneers of the Modern Movement. One would assume therefore, as in the case of her contempories, her work would have been preserved for posterity at any opportunity. It is a great shock that this is not the case. Heritage sites of this magnitude need need the protection of the european parliament, in order to avert any other interests manifesting themselves, as the Hertzberger brothers suspect. If anyone has anymore info as to what action one can take, I would be pleased to hear from them.

The E 1027 is _to_me_ THE most important example of the heroic modernist architecture, as it contains a concern for the inhabitant and sensuality that is unique in it's combination with the highly unsentimental modern approach Eileen Gray have had in it's design. It is disgraceful to see a masterpiece of 20th century architecture being ignored in this manner. Eileen Gray's work does not only represent innovation and ingenuity but also the contribution of women architects to the modern movement in design. This contribution has always been left under the shadow in the writings of architectural critics and historians. It is more bewildering, however, to see it ignored and forgotten as in the case of Villa E.1027.

It is great that at last efforts are being made to save the house. I also managed to visit the house last august while travelling around Europe. My reaction on visiting the house was one of utter disbelief, it felt so surreal to be walking around the decaying remains of a house that had looked so beautiful and pristine in original photographs of it. The place was a mess with most of the windows smashed, the little entrance piece - where you hang your coat was smashed up and lying in bits on the floor, the wooden louvres were either smashed or were very rotten, the kitchen was so appalling I could not bring myself to photograph it although I did manage to take slides of most of the house. However one could still just get a sense of the spirit of the designer such as when I entered the guest bedroom the main wardribe still remains, although slightly altered, I opened the wardrobe and much to my surprise the glass shelves were still there. It was such a joy to open, that wardrobe, the door opened out and was hinged at the centre. And then were the built in presses in the stairs especially the one with the constructivist motifs on the outside, how one opened it only to find another set of doors to open. And then there was the view. Oh it would be such a great pity if nobody else were able to experience this, really it would

Please, at the time that the signs of architecture reverting to a non descript neo-retro-post-you name it are sprouting (and this is a gentle word) throughout the world, an artifact reinforcing the theory of man's evolution in the positive direction must be saved ! It is just a passing bad phase we are going through right now, let's do something good.

Thanks to Paul at Archeire, I think the architecture community in Ireland may have had their eyes opened to this disaster, although from personal knowledge Eileen Gray's work has been largely ignored for years. The sad thing is that it is not just E.1027 that has deteriorated, but the extent to which her work and her influence on others (i.e...yer man!) has been discussed in schools in particular. I wish every success to this gre

We, the "Friends of E-1027", are in the midst of obtaining our status as a non-profit organization. Our fourteen founding members are active and well-known members of the architecture, design, and art communities. We are in contact with the Roquebrune authorities, and are helping to raise money for the purchase and restoration of E-1027. We will be having a fund raising event in May, and are hoping that some of you will join us. To receive a complete press release about the organization and to be updated in the future, please contact us (sandra@geringgallery.com) or Frederieke Taylor (tzart@interport.net).

Neglecting art of merit is a very real expression of society today, and the inability of the understanding minority, to protect relevant pieces, reflects their inability to access the social 'password'. Perhaps if Hollywood were invited to romanticise the tumultuous and yet poetic relationship between Eileen Gray and Le Corbusier there would be social response.....le paradox.

I don't know which is more disheartening - the tragic state (fate?) of the house or the apathy and complete lack of interest, imagination and culture on the part of the Irish government. Even more depressing is the resounding silence from the Irish arts and architecture community. For the price of an average sized semi-detached Georgian house in the booming Irish property market the Irish goverment could save a classic of modern architecture, direct some long deserved attention to a major Irish artist who has been too long neglected and in so doing make partial amends for all the mis-treatment we have meted out to our other 'cultural treasures' (Did somebody say Joyce, Bacon , Georgian Streetscape...?). Maybe the house would be better off in someone else's hands. We may be newly rich but we still have a lot of growing up to do. YES, I am angry.

LeCorbs paintings are a vandalism in the first place, wretched man. Gray's work has a far deeper significance than being just of the modern period. It is so intuitive, a woman's response rather than a male imposition. This is terrible. BTW It's v shocking to see this devastation wouldn't it be possible to put some un-destroyed egs of her work so people can see how wonderful it is. It's impossible to get any sense of that from these photos. I am really v shocked.

Ton meijer , t.meijer@speed.a2000.nl
In het boek van Colin St John Wilson, The other tradition of modern architecture. Approaches have been made in Ireland to the Irish government and Irish industry to try a find a way in which the building could be saved to no avail. This is due to ignorence on the part of those controlling both the state's and large companies' resources. http://www.irish-times.com/irish-times/paper/1998/1121/fea7.html Perhaps through this online initiative some pressure may be brought to bear on the Irish and French authorities to save this important work.

All such pioneering houses are high- maintenance. Private owners cannot always afford the costs involved. However they can be supported by grants, discouraged from vandalism, even live in their house as tenants of a conservation trust. All solutions must now be urgently explored if E1027 is in the state described. The importance of this house cannot be overstated. It is as crucial in the development of domestic architecture as the Villa Savoie, Maison de Verre, Fallingwater, the Eames and Farnsworth houses.

The loss of monuments of the "Modern" era of architecture is as much a political statement as it is one of preservation. The failure to preserve these significant sights if often caused by a desire to repudiate the social engineering/modernist dogma with which they are associated. Whether we accept the programme or not, we must recognize our responsibility as a culture to save and interpret significant elements of our past. There is didactic purpose to this as well from both sides of the issue; whether you like these buildings or not, it is easier to tell your side of the story if you are standing in the artifact or can point to it from the street. It is also a political statement about how society values the significant work of women at a time in which few women had the opportunity to achieve what Eileen Gray did in architecture and design. This generation will be condemned by the future for losing this building-it is significant for its architecture, and for its association with a significant woman in the history of design and architecture. Would this even be an issue if it was Breuer's house, Mies' house, Neutra's house, Corbu's house??? Somehow I think not. Michael Lynch Troy New York USA

The photographs are schocking, the condition of neglect of the villa is unbelievable. Just as incredible is the apparent lack of interest on the part of the French government and architectural community in safeguarding this landmark of sensitive modern architecture and design. The villa, it's precise and elegant interior, the thoughtful care for its inhabitants shown in the design of its furnishings, make it into a monument - not only to the modern movement, but especially to one of the most important female designer-architects of this century - that should be very carefully preserved. For what it's worth, I add my name to the supporting list and hope there might be a way to do more in future.
christine de baan, chrisdb@luna.nl
It's again a very sad example of lack of interest through lack of knowledge. Imagine one would treat a painting by Van Doesburg or Mondrian in a similar way. Action on behalf of the building is very important and can be succesfull. In our town in Heerlen (Southern-Netherlands) the Schunck Departement Store (better known as the 'Glaspaleis Schunck), a modern movement-building with similar qualities as the famous Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam, will be restored in original 'grandeur' because of a similar rescue-action. Moreover it is just recently chosen by the Union of International Architects as one of the thousand most important buildings of the twentieth century on earth. So, go for it.

if you want to save this building-do so. surely the owner has set a price for the property. if you can match whatever sums he expects to make out of owning or developing the property, then it`s all yours and you are free to do with it what you wish. sit gazing at the corbu-murals all day, cut-em out and sell them at auction or tear down the lot to construct some nice vacation villas for the workers of france. but your whining lament combined with a call for the government to infringe on someone elses property right to serve your cultural interests reveals a frightening willingness to use physical force and its seemingly legitimized agencies to further your own selfish goals. and in the name of architectural preservation, to boot!!! if you want to save the house-go collect money, buy it, and do it. don`t come whining to the state to do it for you at someone else`s expense. good luck, roger bundschuh

It is an outrage, that the French architectural heritage is allowed such a fate (may be the fact, that Eileen Gray was English loosened their feeling of responsability). What is more, is that a guided tour can be booked to the neighbouring cabanon of Le Corbusier and hundreds of poeple have obviously made an effort to walk all the way out there for a wooden box, but have not mustered any curiosity for the beautifull villa next to it. The last time I saw the house was three years ago and police tape was keeping the curious away from it: we were told by a beighbour that some mafia-godfather had been living in the house and had been shot dead there. We were allowed only a brief view from the small gate. I will try to visit the area after januari 1999 (after finishing graduate design at the AA in London) and I offer all the help I can give to you to help to preserve the property. Herman, Do you remember we were introduced to one another, and dined in Rome with our mutual friend Michel Furnari? Good to see you taking up and directing this cause. I am stunned. I had no idea of the neglect and abuse suffered by the villa. The French government should be ashamed of letting this happen to a work of art, particularly one which represents an all too rare architectural creation by a female in the first half of this semester. Eileen Gray is a hero and role model of many, particularly female students. To let this work crumble and thereby fade into oblivion is unconscionable. Is this another case of a land developer hoping to devalue an artifact for purposes of eradication and future profit? Let us know what might be done.
