Sonsbeek Pavilion, Aldo van Eyck 1965-1966
ALDO VAN EYCK 80
On March 16th Aldo van Eyck celebrated his eightieth birthday. ArchiNed wants to contribute to the festivities surrounding this occasion in their own way and offers the patriarch of Dutch architecture a reconstruction of his renowned Sonsbeek pavilion, albeit a virtual reconstruction. From the original design a VRML model was made on the basis of publicised drawings. With this model everyone who missed the building at that time- it after all existed for just one summer- can still re-experience something of the spatial experience of this small masterpiece. This will perhaps bring the actual reconstruction a bit closer.

VRML and plug-in
A VRML-model offers the visitor the opportunity to navigate themselves through the three dimensional, virtual, reality. It however requires a special plug-in which can be downloaded free of charge. The model of the Sonsbeek pavilion is made to be viewed in Cosmo Player 2.0, other VRML viewers are not tested and may not work as well or possibly not at all. Unfortunately the Cosmo Player is only for Windows95 and Unix computers. For Apple Macintosh only a test version is available.

Download Cosmo Player here if you don't have the plug-in and follow the installation instructions before you return to this page (with a 28k8 modem it takes about 20 minutes).

navigation
If you go to the model you can follow an automatic tour or navigate yourself from pre set-up standpoints. The standpoints or the tour can be clicked on by the button in the left corner of the viewer's 'dashboard'. Navigating can be done by using the arrow keys on the keyboard, by using the mouse or by using the different options on the 'dashboard'. A detailed explanation can be requested via the help button on the right of the dashboard. Furthermore it is primarily just trying, or if you prefer you can start the automatic tour and lay back. Tip: the smaller the 'window' where the VRML-model is shown the more fluent the movements.

the model
The presented model is an abstraction of the reality. The walls are smooth and not made from concrete blocks like in reality. This abstraction is consciously chosen to make the downloading and navigation also possible for slower modems. But besides that this model is especially about a representation of the spatial experience. The actual experience can naturally never by imitated, if not only because of the missing sculptures and people in the pavilion, because for that the pavilion must be reconstructed 1:1.
