New Babylon
- The value of dreaming the city of tomorrow
|
January 26 and 27 2000 the organisation LINK organised a
seminar on Constants' dream of 'unitary urbanism' at the Delft
University of Technology, with the aim of investigating its
background and its relevance for todays' architects. The organisers
summarised it like this: "A search for the significance
of the ideological, social and polemical dimension of architecture,
the value of critique and the integral vision of man and the
built environment." Now, a report on the seminar can
can be found at the ArchiNed Extra pages.

DataWolk
Hoeksche Waard

|
The
DataWolk (or DataCloud) is an internet environment combining
the characteristics of a knowledgemap, a fuzzy searchengine
and a podium for dialogue. The basis for the DataWolk are
separate dataobjects on a specific theme, which are brought
in by the visitors or changed by them. The DataWolk is an
instrument to get a hold on a complex and in many ways untracable
structure of informations and their interconnections. The
first time this browser has been used is on the occasion of
an international manifestation on new urban strategies for
the island Hoeksche Waard. On the basis of the characteristics
of the dataobjects the informations in the DataWolk
Hoeksche Waard can be organised and explored in an intuitive
way.

SmartArchitecture
|
The research-project SmartArchitecture looks for combinations
of new, exciting architecture and 'green' solutions. With
the launch of this website a beginning is made towards an
online research on Smart projects, designers, ideas and techniques
in architecture. A special part of the site is the smartgrid,
which enables the visitors to see the links between the various
items. In this grid the connections between projects, techniques
and concepts are made.
Smart architecture offers an integral solution to a variety
of design challenges: the environmental problem, the optimal
use of space and other resources, a functional utilization
of materials and technology, and aesthetics.Smart architecture
is never just green - it is always something more.

Villa E.1027
by Eileen Gray in Ruins

Recently some architectural magazine in The Netherlands published
a cry of distress by Herman and Hans Hertzberger. During a visit
this summer to Eileen Gray's Villa E.1027 they saw the Villa in
a deplorable state. The objective of their SOS is to let the world
know about this disaster in the making. They hope that The Villa's
fate can still be turned. ArchiNed wants to support Herman and Hans
Hertzberger's campaign by opening a
protest guestbook.

MVRDV is known
for its innovative architecture like the 'WoZoCo' in Amsterdam (1996)
and the VPRO-villa in Hilversum (1997). Their also active in the
field of urban planning. One experiment in this field is 'alleviated
urban planning'.
A sample of alleviated urban planning is the animation 'Permanence',
showing interesting mutations of the city of Rotterdam with a surprising
end. Important here is the 'alleviation' of the city, as opposed
to the 'condensation' of the city. MVRDV are convinced that ecology
and economy should and can be united. MVRDV:
