Today, march 31, the results of the locations in The Netherlands of the Europan 5 contest will be made available from 17.30 onwards.

East meets West

"There is a large demand for citizen-friendly museums, with a friendly architecture. I always try to build such attractive new museums. I believe that not only museums, but also architecture, must express the spirit of the time. That is why architecture is philosophy for me." according to Kisho Kurokawa, the designer of the new wing for the Amsterdam's Van Gogh museum.

Upon invitation by De Appel the Chinese Parisian Hou Hanru composed an exposition containing work of young Dutch artists and architects. The central theme of this exhibition Unlimited.nl-2, is the urban area. Hanru sees the developments around the urban area as the most impressive cultural project in the Netherlands at this time.

E-1027, part 2
February, 1999

Last fall, Herman and Hans Hertzberger started an action to preserve Villa E. 1027 designed by Eileen Gray. Many reactions were written in the guest book that was opened for the occasion. A large number of writers feel that the French or the Irish government should purchase the villa. Some are of the opinion that when the professional community finds it such an important object, they should raise the money and buy it themselves. In the past months we have received more information about the Villa and her history. Thus E.1027 part 2.

Christian Kieckens at the BiA

The architect Christian Kieckens (Aalst, Belgium) lectured at the Berlage Institute in Amsterdam on 26th of January. He introduced his recent work in the particular context of Belgium architecture which, as he explained, should be understood as a condition of survival.
At the Berlage Institute Christian Kieckens explained his aim “to find some basic principles in the attitude of non-presence instead of the contemporary mood of (trans)appearance.”

A 3D-vision in urbanity by MVRDV
January, 1999

Until February 13th the Stroom Haags Centrum for Sculpture Art presents Datatown', a vision by MVRDV on city and urbanity. In this presentation MVRDV asks itself how we can understand and manage the city in times of globalisation and scaling-up. Do we loose control in this vastness or can we make arrange and manage the components and problems of the city?

Aldo van Eyck deceased
January, 1999

Last Wednesday the Dutch architect Aldo van Eyck deceased. The influence of this great architect will truly be missed in the Dutch architecture. Van Eyck doesn't leave behind a large oeuvre. But his most famous designs: the orphanage and so called motherhouse in Amsterdam, the Sonsbeekpavilion in Arnhem, the Molucca church in Deventer, Estec in Noordwijk, and most recently the office for the Public Account Committee in Den Hague are without any doubt milestones in post-war architecture. Because of this, and his role as animator, and spokesman for Forum and Team Ten, as tutor in Amsterdam and Delft, and as indefatigable writer of polemics did Van Eyck set the architectural discussion these last fifty years.
