ArchiNed Discussion: Pig City May 28, 2001 Over the past four years the Rotterdam architecture office MVRDV has studied ways to streamline production in the intensive pig farming sector. Animal welfare and efficient land use were important factors in developing the concept. The result is Pig City: tall towers in which pigs spend their entire lives. Although Pig City is a concept, MVRDV stress its feasibility. But can it, should it, must it be implemented? ArchiNed outlines the background and canvases views. The Netherlands produces some 16.5 million tonnes of pig meat each year, making it the European Union's leading exporter. In 1999 there were officially 15.2 million pigs in the country, and 15.5 million people. Each pig requires 664 square metres of space, including that required for meat processing. In light of the recent epidemics, it has become clear that 'something' must be done with today's pig industry. If meat consumption was to stay at today's levels and purely organic farming methods were introduced, the pig industry would need 75% of the surface area of the Netherlands. But that's no real option. Is it therefore not possible to consolidate the entire pig farming industry into compact farm units, eliminating the need for transport and distribution and reducing the risk of spreading diseases? Pig City provides a radical answer to this question. MVRDV collaborated with the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Fisheries to produce a film on the subject. Using computer animations and a stream of indecipherable data, MVRDV outline the framework within which the pig sector could develop, on the basis of a stable pattern of consumption. If pigs are efficiently kept in stacked 'apartments' in such a way that they enjoy better conditions, the meat acquires a better taste, livestock transport becomes unnecessary, diseases are eliminated, and the Netherlands acquires more space, according to MVRDV. Pig City proposes 76 towers, each measuring 622 metres in height. The pigs are kept on the 87x87-metre floors. Large balconies allow the animals to rummage around under trees outside. A central abattoir is housed in the plinth, and pigs for slaughter are moved in lifts. On top is a fish farm that supplies some of the food needed. Each tower also contains a central slurry-processing plant and a biogas tank, which easily caters for the tower's energy needs. To reduce transport costs, 44 towers are located in the port; the other towers are located close to major cities. Pig City MVRDV To accompany the proposal's launch, Stroom, the centre for visual art in The Hague, organised a discussion entitled Morals on May 9 last. Seven specialists in the fields of ethics and animal rights, organic farming, politics and pig farming were questioned about the proposal by artist Ronald van Tienhoven and architect Winy Maas. Most of the speakers vehemently opposed the Pig City proposal. Their criticism centred on the dangers of centralisation. Should one element be put out of operation, then the consequences for the whole system couldn't be foreseen. There were also unfavourable comments about the belief that society can reduce nature into models that are then turned into reality. What is more, the pig flats would 'harm' the image of the pig-farming sector. Architecture critics in the media were much more receptive and viewed it as a courageous proposal. "Pig City combines creative thinking with a bookkeeper's realism. If the pig flat is a Utopia, then it's a Utopia without ideals", according to Hans Ibelings in the Volkskrant daily. So what's MVRDV getting at? Why spend four years on this supposedly unfeasible project? Is Pig City an indictment of the bio-industry? Is this radical proposal and powerful visual presentation meant to inject life into a tiresome discussion? Seen for what it is, Pig City is a cartoon-like representation of today's situation and, unlike the secret bio-industry, makes no attempt to gloss over the consequences of our pattern of consumption. The presentation, for that matter, is so lifelike that many read it as a realistic alternative. Can one speak of 'tainted' work within (Dutch) architecture? Are there architects who have declined commissions on ethical grounds? Is ethics something we can simply afford to indulge in and therefore of no relevance to the everyday practice of architecture? The simple idea provides great discussions for our future projects, and that's really important. But we agree with Lolailo. We have to deal with several metropolitan problems that we can hardly solve. Now, why deal with "pigtropolis" problems? Those ideias would be welcome to plan small scale farming in a "hollistic" way. No more of that "Matrix" stuff, of “final solution for all problems. We have planners enough to solve our problems. If we have many solutions to the same problem, why pick just one? In de jaren 50 deed deze Duits- Amerikaanse post-humanist een voorstel voor een ingrijpende re-distributie van de Noord-Amerikaanse bevolking over het subcontinent. Uitgangspunt was een mogelijke atoomaanval van het 'rijk van het kwaad', de USSR - een angst die bijvoorbeeld op fantastische wijze werd verbeeld in de Sci-fi-klassieker 'The Blob'. Om een atoomaanval te overleven stelde Hilberseimer voor de steden in een gelijkmatig patroon over het landschap te verdelen volgens de nieuwste inzichten van mobiliteit, industriele vervuiling, hygiene-eisen en natuurlijk de overlevingskansen bij een H-bommenregen. Werkelijk prachtige tekeningen leverde dit project op, een planetaire visie die wellicht ooit op Mars of een andere buitenaardse tabula rasa gerealiseerd zal worden. Monumentaal, heroisch, visioniair - woorden schieten tekort... gelukkig is deze blauwdruk voor een 'grote sprong voorwaarts' - zoals in China of de USSR wel gebeurde - nooit uitgevoerd. Een vergelijking met Hilberseimer laat wat mij betreft twee dingen zien: 1. Pigcity is op een veel te kleine schaal gedacht; een Europese dimensie is noodzakelijk; 2. MVRDV is onkritisch naar zijn opdracht(gever) toe; net als Hilberseimer laten ze de grenzen van hun project en denken bepalen door de gestelde opgave; iedereen die buiten die grenzen stapt, kan Pigcity maar moeilijk serieus nemen - het effect is dat van een doorgedraaide rationaliteit, fundamentalistisch in het vasthouden aan de eigen uitgangspunten hoe de uitwerking daarvan ook uitpakt - en dat doet weer denken aan de bureaucratie van de nationale ministeries en de Europese instellingen... Misschien moeten generatie-genoot bureau Schie of oude rot Louis Leroy eens een werkelijk kritisch alternatief voorstel doen...? Dirk van den Heuvel Een belachelijk idoot plan! Voor half geld bouw je half hoge toren met een kleiner oppervlak voor de varkens. Economisch/ecologisch complete onzin dus. Dieren zijn nog niet zo maatschappelijk aanvaard dat er een markt is om het hoogste gebouw ter wereld te bouwen voor varkens. Op 600 meter hoogte staat er een behoorlijke wind en is het koud en er bestaat een kans dat een varken naar beneden valt, dus hoe gaan die beesten buiten bij een boom wroeten. Als we ook zulke torens bouwen voor koeien, kippen en tuinbouw wat levert dat dan op voor de overgebleven gebieden? Is dit panieken bij een gesuggereerd ruimtegebrek of is dit een kwalitatieve statement waar varken, boer en buitenstaander bij gebaat is? Martin Conclusie: Denk 21e Eeuws; geniet van Uw met zorg uitgezochte stukje vlees, aanvaard zonder gewetensbezwaren elke opdracht en koop Uw ethiek bij mij. Verklaring: Dat MVRDV aan hun Pig-city project geen úitgesproken waarde-oordeel verbindt zegt niet dat die er niet is. Zoals vaker met kunst is ze verborgen in het werk zelf. In dit geval als dubbele bodem-boodschap achter een lachspiegel. Ons persoonlijk interpreteren van het onuitgesprokene is wat de discussie maakt, het onderwerp in de openbaarheid brengt. Op die wijze genereert dit project de nodige ethische uitspraken. Een willekeurige uitspraak als: "Bbq-en is het misselijkmakende ruimen van vee op kleine schaal ter verhoging van platte feestvreugde" verandert bij mij de gemoedstoestand als ik in iemands tuin het bijbehorende aroma ontdek. En mét de gemoedstoestand mijn trek in vlees. Dat zelfde effect heeft dit project. Ook omdat het varkens vermenselijkt; ze "wonen" in flats. Ik zie de reclame-brochure al voor me: Hier ziet U varken Kees Krul de Derde onbezorgd genieten van zijn fantastische galgen-uitzicht. De ideale lokatie ook voor een Animal Farm/varkens-versie van de TV-soap Big Brother. (woordspeling kado) Dit maakt het eten van varkens tot pseudo- kannibalisme. Anderzijds laat het project op shockerende wijze zien dat we het blijkbaar zó ver hebben laten komen met de bio-industrie, dat dit een verbetering is tov de huidige situatie. Sterker nog; als we zo doorgaan is dit het Best Possible Scenario. Niet zo doorgaan is dus ook de boodschap. Zonder hongerige maag, en zonder zorgen over de dag van morgen praten over ethiek is een luxe. Vlees als massaproduct goedkoop consumeren ten koste van kleinschalige veeteelt in de 3e Wereld is een luxe. Ethiek is geen patent,voorrecht van rijke ontwikkelde landen, ethiek vind je in alle culturen en bestaat al zolang de mens kan praten, misschien wel grommen. Volgens mij waren Neanderthaler en Cro Magnon- mens ( die bijvoorbeeld hun naasten met bloemen begroeven )al tot bepaalde hoogte ethisch ontwikkeld. In zoverre dat ze bij het verbrijzelen van een schedel van een levend rendier hun gezicht eerder afgewend zullen hebben dan met kwijlende hoektanden in een psychopatische lachbui zouden zijn uitgebarsten. Een 21e Eeuwse interpretatie is dat ethiek en religie (oa) menselijk gedrag zó structureren, dat een samenleving ontstaat op het randje van orde en chaos. Hierdoor blijft de samenleving net flexibel genoeg om mee te kunnen veranderen/evolueren met een continu veranderende omringende wereld. Religie en ethiek moeten mee-evolueren om hun invloed niet te laten afsterven met maatschappelijke onrust als gevolg. Te véél ethiek of religieuze voorschriften kunnen de flexibiliteit van een samenleving anderzijds ook zo frustreren dat ze in een crisis beland . Dit is de chaotische fase- overgangstoestand die voortduurt tot een hernieuwd evenwicht tussen ethiek /religie en maatschappij op het randje van orde en chaos is gekristalliseerd. Door toenemende commercialisering, globalisering, vervreemding en individualisering in de hedendaagse samenleving ontstaat een afvlakking van normen en waarden, die roept om een geactualiseerde repliek van ethici en theologen. Ik ben blij dat Nederlandse kunstenaars de ruimte nog vinden om met hun radicale standpunten, paradigma's, taboe-brekers en disposities de ethiek op hoog nivo levendig te houden. Het zijn eye-openers die door hun verse invalshoek nieuwe informatie en inzichten geven over de wereld waarin we leven. Visies die zeer welkom zijn bij het anticiperen op de uitdagingen van de toekomst. Ethiek is geen luxe voor architecten, ethiek is voor architecten een specialisme. En te veel specialisten verstikken de wereld maar. Dus neem die onethische opdracht gewoon aan, maak er het beste van, reken een marktconform loon en bij last van gewetensbezwaren koop je wat ethiek bij mij. Wanneer deze een conclusie aan een reeks gegevens hangt, is enige ethische discusie daarbij volledig overbodig (het kan wel gevoerd worden maar waarom zou je). Coming from South Africa , I am all to aware of the far reaching consequences the social suggestions of over zealous designers ( of Dutch decent in our case) can have. Our country’s past is littered with the misdirected suggestions of architects and planners. It was urbanists who suggested and designed the first “black township”. It was architects who designed the towering appallingly inhumane “hostels” for our black mine workers. It was planners who drew the first lines dividing races on our maps. Our profession was the backbone of the APARTHEID REGIME in South Africa. Some things are just WRONG. Even if they are architecturally profound or extremely creative. On lighter note, and having worked in Rotterdam myself, I have been exposed to the amazing saturation of creativity and passion the Netherlands has to offer . Vooruitgang is een streven, maar projecten als 'pig city' zijn pure achteruitgang. Wij lijken Amerika wel. Niet de productie moet vergroot of gestabiliseerd worden, maar juist de geest van de mens. Ieder individu moet inzien dat ieder wezen recht heeft op een leven van waarde. Dus behandel dieren als mensen, geef om ze. Ziektes zullen verdwijnen ondanks het transport. De capaciteitsgedachte is ouderwets en achterhaald. Hoewel ik MVRDV een spannend bureau vind, denk ik dat ze bij dit project de grens van de ethiek zeer overschrijden. Het lijkt me echter lastig om er een initiatiefnemer of opdrachtgever bij te vinden die het bovendien voor elkaar krijgt om een aantrekkelijk 'onderdak' te bieden aan de huidige groep iv-boeren. Hoe denk je dat die hun huidige 'kapitaal' kunnen omzetten naar deelname in pigcity? Bram Het plan legt een hoop hypocrisie bloot omtrend de veeteelt, maar veegt ook alle hoopvolle menselijkheid over de omgang met dieren resoluut van tafel. Lieve ontwerpers, vergeet uw verantwoordelijkheid niet ten overstaan van de maatschappij niet. Er zijn altijd wel geldwolven te vinden, die niet genoeg ethisch verantwoordelijkheidsgevoel hebben en zulke plannen dan ook rustig uitvoeren als het geld oplevert. Cave man "Pig-city" en "Data"town veronderstellen een bepaalde objectiviteit, terwijl het gemis van hetgeen onbenoembaar maar wel voelbaar ontbreekt aangeeft waarom dergelijke exercities jeuk veroorzaken: het is een spectaculair, visueel verleidelijk denkmodel van architecten die met hun selectie van gegevens een provocerende gevoelsarmoede illustreren die aan blijkt te spreken bij de financierende overheid. (De "megawindmolenwand" is daarentegen een van de beste ontwerpen dat ik de afgelopen jaren gezien heb) A. Waaraan het bij MVRDV ontbreekt is, (en wat overigens door Piet Vollaard in zijn collumn over Rem Koolhaas op Archined goed is verwoordt en geldt voor vele OMA adepten) een eigen waardeoordeel. Ik kan mij herinneren dat Herman Hertzberger de opdracht voor de 'Bijlmerbajes' heeft geweigerd, omdat hij met het programma van eisen niet kon werken. Het is om de critici en alle architectuurmanderijnen bezig te houden en hen het gevoel te geven dat men met iets zinnigs bezig is. John Buijs Ze zijn lekker bezig. Het is wederom een ‘MVRDV one-liner’ - een gimmick-concept dat moet worden gerechtvaardigd door pseudo-statistiek. Het gehele verhaal lijkt in idee wel verdacht veel op een afstudeerwerk van een TU studente (gepubliceerd in TU-bouwkunde- jaarboek van enige jaren geleden) die met een ‘pig-factory’ bufferzones tussen metropolen wilde bewerkstelligen. En in uitvoering op een van de Pixels uit Pixelcity (hee...Leuke naam!) van .NL architects. Met Copy-Paste werk is niks mis, maar om daar nou vier jaar onderzoek voor te schrijven..., dat lijkt mij enigsinds overdreven. Floris van der Poel Wat betreft die vraag over besmet werk: Het verhaal gaat dat Aldo van Eyck ooit Bakema verweet dat hij met zijn bureau een kerncentrale (een kleintje in Delft) en een wapenfabriek (Hispano Suiza)had ontworpen. Dat was moreel niet verantwoord. Bakema: Ja maar Aldo jij hebt kerken ontworpen, hoe zit dat dan? In elk geval is een opdracht aanvaarden niet de belangrijkste morele kwestie, maar de manier waarop je hem uitvoert. MVRDV valt dus eventueel pas a- moraliteit te verwijten zodra ze gaan bouwen zou je zeggen. Als MVRDV op dit moment iets te verwijten valt, dan zou dat het feit zijn dat ze kennelijk 'best bereid zijn om deze giga varkensflats te bouwen'. Geen zinnig mens kan volgens mij volhouden dat dat een duurzame oplossing voor het varkensprobleem is. Het probleem is: er zijn veel en veel te veel varkens in Nederland. Dat heeft het Pigcity plan nu tenminste ook voor architecten en stedenbouwers duidelijk gemaakt (de rest van Nederland wist dat al lang) De oplossing: er moeten veel en veel minder varkens overblijven. Varkenshouderij voor de export moet drastisch verminderen. Dat de Nederlandse economie hier zwaar onder zou leiden is demagogie die zo snel mogelijk ontzenuwd moet worden. Misschien dat MVRDV hier eens wat statistieken en data op los kan laten? Piet Vollaard kan MRVDV nou eens ophouden met statistiekgrappen? op de middelbare school hebben we eens uitgerekend dat de totale mensheid in één kubieke kilometer past, misschien een idee voor het volgende "architectonische" hoogstandje.
