De expositie onderzoekt het concept van ruimte in het werk van Herman Hertzberger (1932). Hertzberger stelt zelf dat publieke en private ruimtes niet wezenlijk van elkaar verschillen: publiek en privaat zijn ruimtelijke kwaliteiten die variëren in de mate van toegankelijkheid, verantwoordelijkheid en de wijze van toezicht op de ruimtes. Hertzberger definieert de overgang tussen deze ruimtes door materialen, vormen, licht en kleuren.

De Nederlandse overheid heeft in de architectuurnota 'Ontwerpen aan Nederland tien Grote Projecten aangewezen die moeten helpen de schrikbeelden van een doorgroeiend Nederland tegen te gaan. De tentoonstelling bestaat uit tekeningen, maquettes, films en foto's die een beeld geven van de stand van zaken rond de tien Grote Projecten.

Known as the 'Major Projects', the ten projects launched by the government in late 2000 in its policy document 'Shaping the Netherlands: Architecture Policy 2001-2004' are highly diverse in character. In the exhibition the NAi will examine government policy in the field of architecture and physical planning and place it in a historical context.
