The Berkeley Prize 2002

Berkeley to promote architecture as a social art through writing and criticism, two traditionally underrepresented aspects of the architecture curriculum. Queens Plaza
.In the early part of the 20th Century, with its wide, tree-lined streets, Queens Plaza, in Long Island City, fulfilled its role as the gateway to Queens and as a significant depar-ture point to Manhattan. With the construction of the elevated subway tracks and an ever-increasing volume of traffic, however, Queens Plaza's built form has lost its emblematic role. First prize is won by Surachai Akekapobyotin and Juthathip Techachumreon from New York. Best Dutch Honorable mention: Maarten van Tuijl and Naoko Hikami from Amsterdam

Lensvelt de Architect Interieurprijs

Opera Ruimtelijke Ontwerpers uit Amsterdam hebben de eerste Lensvelt de Architect interieurprijs ontvangen voor hun ontwerp van de vaste tentoonstelling van het Volkenkundig museum in Leiden. Meer informatie: zie de website van Opera.

EAP

De Euregionale Architectuur Prijs is een grensoverschrijdend samenwerkingsverband tussen ontwerpopleidingen en beroepsorganisaties en architectuurcentra in Duitsland, België en Nederland. De Prijs wordt jaarlijks uitgereikt aan het beste afstudeerproject van de deelnemende architectuuropleidingen uit de Euregio Maas-Rijn. Dit jaar werd de prijs gewonnen door Marc Schwabedissen uit Berlijn met een ontwerp dat gesitueerd langs de zuidelijke oever van de rivier Tejo in Almada, tegenover de hoofdstad van Portugal, Lissabon. Europa's mooiste parkeergarage

VIRTUAL MUSEUM INTERNATIONAL INTERACTIVE IDEAS COMPETITION

The competition calls for a re-conception of the traditional "exhibition space" within our current sensibilities and technologies, and at the same time, calls for the design of new digital interfaces, online or offline, as effective alternatives to physical spaces. Participants are free to choose one of the two objectives or to confront one against the other. Grand prize went to Nathan l. Colkitt, Michael R. Sablone, David M. Schafer and Gregory M. de Peña from de USA. Look at the website for al the others who won prizes and all the plans that where send in.

 

Museumbos

Gevraagd wordt om een compleet en autonoom bos van een hectare te ontwerpen in Almere. Hierbij zijn uitvoerbaarheid en duurzaamheid van het ontwerp, alsook ontwikkeling van het levend materiaal in de tijd van groot belang. De tien uitgekozen ontwerpen zullen worden uitgewerkt en uitgevoerd in samenwerking met de gemeente Almere, Staatsbosbeheer en de ontwerper. (Prijsvraag volgens Kompas). Winnaar is Boto van der Meulen i.s.m. OPEN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION OF "CONCEPTUAL AND EXPERIMENTAL UNBUILT" ARCHITECTURAL WORK VIA THE INTERNET

An international competition of "conceptual and experimental un-built" architectural works developed between 1998 and 2001. The goal of the competition is to promote and reveal the potency of "new conceptual and experimental work" in architecture today. The objective is to award design works that provoke new cultural visions, possible practices, and new understandings of urbanity in the contemporary world. First prize won by: Garofalo Architects & Michael Mcinturf Architects. Brugplein, Boegbeeld van 't Zand

De opgave betrof het ontwerpen van een woonwerk gebouw vanuit een inspirerend en innovatief concept met tevens daarin vervat een voorstel voor het parkeren op eigen terrein. Het terrein mag voor 100% worden bebouwd. De plek ligt in het van rijkswege vastgestelde beschermde stadsgezicht van 's-Hertogenbosch. Winnaar: TARRA architectuur en stedenbouw uit 's Hertogenbosch.

Welstandprijs Noord Brabant

Algemene winnaar van de welstandprijs Noord-Brabant 2001 is het ontwerp van Marius van den Wildenberg voor bedrijfspand aan de Staarten in Boxtel in opdracht van Drukkerij Tielen. Daarnaast zijn in nog zeven categorieën prijzen uitgereikt. Zie de website voor details.

"Archie", de Twentse architectuurprijs

Saxion Hogeschool in Enschede, een ontwerp van Harry Abels van IAA-architecten is zowel door de vakjury als door 'het publiek' uitgeroepen tot mooiste gebouw van Twente.

Rietveldprijs 2001

De Rietveldprijs 2001 is toegekend aan EMBT Arquitectes Associats (voorheen het bureau van Enric Miralles) voor de nieuwbouw, verbouw en renovatie van het stadhuis met het voorplein.

ACCOMMODATING CHANGE Circle 33 Innovation in Housing Competition for Students
there has been a renewed focus on the future of housing. Not only in the encouragement of better design but also in the materials and processes that are used in new housing projects. The aim is to explore the possibility for development of new housing typologies and processes. Competitors are encouraged to explore the following themes: Typology · Innovative House Plan Typologies · Lifetime Housing · Flexibility and Adaptability in Housing Sustainability · Ecological Sustainability · Social Sustainability Density · High Density Housing · High Rise Housing Technology · Prefabricated Housing · New Technologies in Housing · New Materials in Housing. The site identified for the competition forms part of the Tredegar Estate in Bow, east London. It is of sufficient size (8,700m2, or 0.87ha) to offer entrants the ability to look either at the design of individual dwelling units or the manner in which these can be brought together to create an integrated and revitalised neighbourhood.

Voor de Nederlands-Duitse zone tussen Utrecht en Oberhausen wordt een innovatieve toekomstgerichte strategie gevraagd "die recht doet aan de rollen van publieke en private beslissers in het maatschappelijk proces en aan de verschillende leefwijzen van de bewoners en passanten van en door een gebied tussen twee grote metropolen dat zich deels kenmerkt door de doorsnijding van verschillende vormen van economische en ecologische infrastructuur".

Metro-Poles - Underground nets : open idea competition
Das Berliner U-Bahn-Netz gehört zu den bedeutendsten herkömmlichen Infrastruktur-Netzen der Hauptstadt. Im Laufe seiner rund hundertjährigen Bau- und Nutzungsgeschichte sind immer wieder "tote Tunnel" entstanden – Teilstücke des Metro-Netzes, die entweder nicht mehr genutzt werden oder nie benutzt wurden. Diese Tunnel sind in einem zufälligen Muster über das gesamte Stadtgebiet verteilt. Aufgabe ist - die Einwicklung eines vernetzten Nutzungskonzepts für die räumlich weit auseinander liegenden Tunnel. Die Tunnel sollen dabei als Hubs (Knotenpunkte) einer zu erfindenden neuen Vernetzung dienen; - die exemplarische architektonische Vertiefung eines der Tunnel nach Wahl: Dort soll "Licht ins Dunkel" gebracht werden durch einen räumlichen Oben-Unten-Bezug im Einklang mit der gewählten Nutzungsoption und durch Markierung dieser Vernetzung in der Topografie der Oberfläche.

STADSKANTOOR ROTTERDAM
Ideeënprijsvraag voor een nieuw stadskantoor. Het gebouw dient naast kantoorruimte, gemeentelijke diensten en gemeentelijke publieksbalies ruimte te bieden aan winkels, bedrijven, horeca en woningen. Duurzame ontwikkeling is een belangrijk uitgangspunt. De wijze waarop het voormalige Stadstimmerhuis aan de Meent ingepast kan worden in het nieuwe stadskantoor is een belangrijk onderdeel van de opgave. Er worden vijf prijzen uitgereikt met een totale waarde van 50.000 Euro. De prijswinnende ideeën vormen een inspiratiebron voor een publiek debat tussen burgers, ontwerpers en bestuurders. Apart from office space and information desks the building could also be used by shops, cafes and restaurants, and housing. Sustainability and the way the existing Stadstimmerhuis is incorporated in the new building are important items. There are five prizes worth a total of 50.000 Euro. The winning ideas will be used as inspiration for a debate between the public, architects and administrators.

REDEVELOPMENT OF PIAZZA MERCATALE IN PRATO
This is a huge Square, near the river at the foot of one of the most important Apennine passes of the entire plane, the market place, encircled by houses with Porticos built to give shelter to the traders and their goods. These are all elements which make Mercatale a rich and multi-structured example of how urban identity, economic reality and physical space can be closely related to each other. The Square, over time, has lost its commercial function, but without ceasing to be a central point of reference for those living in and around the town. In defining the destiny of these urban spaces, economic, political and social factors enter into play along with the ability of the society itself to recognise and develop important collective values for the Square which can keep pace with the contemporary "vitality". This competition offers the opportunity to examine closely the function of space in the Square and its relationship with the entire urban structure.

Uitvaartcultuur als Ontwerpopgave
Secularisering, individualisering, een hernieuwde belangstelling voor spiritualiteit en de opkomst van de multiculturele samenleving leiden tot veranderingen in het denken over de uitvaart. Daarmee staat ook de situering en de vormgeving van uitvaartcentra ter discussie. De ideeënprijsvraag 'Uitvaartcultuur als ontwerpopgave' betreft het ontwerpen van een uitvaartcentrum, al dan niet in combinatie met een begraafplaats en/of crematorium, dat inspeelt op nieuwe culturele en maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen. Welke ruimtelijke indeling, compositie en architectonische uitstraling passen bij uitvaartcentra-nieuwe stijl? Kunnen ze worden verrijkt met een hotel, een beeldentuin, een bibliotheek, een café, een keuken? Gegeven is een keuze uit drie locaties in Den Haag of een - gemotiveerde - vrije locatiekeuze. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan een mobiel uitvaartcentrum, een uitvaartcentrum on line, een uitvaartcentrum binnen het stedenbouwkundige principe van de corridor of het concept van de gestapelde stad. Het totale prijzengeld bedraagt 4500 euro inclusief BTW, door de jury bestaande uit rijksbouwmeester Jo Coenen (voorzitter), directeur Rijksdienst voor de Monumentenzorg Fons Asselbergs, fotografe Marrie Bot, stedenbouwkundige Gijs Wallis de Vries en architect Wilfried van Winden, naar eigen inzicht te verdelen.

ACADIA International Design Competition 2001
The Inforum is a hypothetical project where the city of Berlin wishes to create a new kind of civic gathering place, which can build on the synergy of public and commercial information technology. SWISS NATIONAL MUSEUM RENOVATION AND EXPANSION, ZURICH
Built between 1892 and 1898, the "Schweizerisches Landesmuseum" (Swiss National Museum) finds itself in poor condition and in dire need of a comprehensive renovation. A new building is to provide additional floor space of approx. 4,000m2 for administration and exhibition purposes. The basic concept for architecture and administration of the museum has to be redefined: the distribution of functions between the existing and the new building is to be reconsidered within the framework of the given museum concept. BRUSSELS AIRPORT COMPETITION
The project addresses the renovation of the old terminal building and the adjoining office building constructed during the 1950s (architects: Maxime Brunfaut, Georges Bontinck and Jos Moutschen). The terminal renovation must not in any way impinge on the functions essential to the smooth running of the airport. The control tower on top of the adjacent office building and access to the railway station must be maintained. The original centralized design must be kept and the renovation plans must blend harmoniously into the built environment constructed in accordance with the master plan drawn up for the site as a whole such as to form a coherent and controlled whole. The arrangement selected is an interest call followed by a two-stage design competition.
